Milan Bergamo Airport confirms its commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and sustainable mobility through a structured program of initiatives aimed at the local community, with a particular focus on schools. Starting in February, the airport launched a series of educational visits dedicated to schools in the Province of Bergamo, involving upper secondary school classes in a structured and hands-on learning pathway.
The project was created with the goal of bringing students closer to sustainability issues, making them active protagonists of an increasingly necessary cultural shift. The airport visits go beyond a purely observational experience, becoming true learning opportunities where theory and practice come together. A central element of the program was the focus on sustainable mobility and intermodality.
The initiative is part of the first edition of the “Bike Future Challenge” project, launched by the airport in autumn 2025 and addressed to upper secondary schools in the area. Its aim is to engage students in developing ideas and projects related to environmental sustainability, integrated mobility, and sustainable tourism.
The visit was structured in several stages. The first took place at the SACBO Building Auditorium, where students explored the journey that led the airport to obtain the “Bike Friendly” certification, learning about the procedures adopted, the strategies implemented, and the concrete actions developed to encourage more sustainable mobility.
The students then visited the airport terminal and the bike room, a tangible symbol of the airport’s commitment to promoting soft mobility and services for those who choose to reach the airport by bicycle. Thanks also to a meeting with Visit Bergamo, students discovered the cycling network that connects the airport to the main routes towards Bergamo and the surrounding area, integrating with existing paths and fostering increasingly smooth, intermodal, and sustainable mobility.
The experience concluded at the new Mobility Plaza, a strategic hub set to revolutionize access to the airport, where the future railway station will be built.
Over the months, the contest provided students with a concrete opportunity to put into practice the skills and knowledge acquired at school. Participants were asked to develop innovative projects related to environmental sustainability, intermodality, and sustainable tourism, with particular attention to the role of the bicycle as a link between different modes of transport.
One of the project’s distinctive features was its interdisciplinary approach. The participation of schools with different educational focuses made it possible to address sustainability from diverse yet complementary perspectives. This integration of skills encouraged the development of well-structured, practical, and potentially applicable projects.
The students’ work reflected a multifaceted vision of the values associated with sustainability and intermodality: video interviews, presentations, brochures, videos, an interactive web page, and even an energy bar for cyclists made with local products.
The educational value of the initiative also lies in its ability to stimulate essential soft skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, creative thinking, and presentation skills. Students were asked not only to generate ideas, but also to structure them effectively and communicate them, simulating dynamics typical of the professional world and real project development.
The airport visits also served as a career orientation opportunity, offering students direct insight into a complex and dynamic professional environment like the airport sector. In this sense, the project helps strengthen the link between schools and the local area, fostering greater awareness of professional opportunities connected to sustainability and mobility.
Through this project, Milan Bergamo Airport confirms its role not only as an airport operator, but also as an active player in the sustainable development of the region—investing in the education of new generations and promoting an integrated vision of mobility.
A journey that brings together infrastructure, innovation, and culture, with the goal of building a more sustainable future starting with young people.
