Project AVIO: The Digital Twin revolutionizing Milan Bergamo Airport

Project AVIO has officially launched, born from a synergistic collaboration between SACBO,  the companies TXT e-tech and Sorint.TEK, and the University of Pavia. The initiative focuses on  the study and prototyping of a Digital Twin, creating an advanced simulated reality to enhance  the management of all ground operations and the training of airport staff. The project has  been co-financed by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy through the Complementary  Fund of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

The goal of the project is to optimize airport operations, making them not only more efficient  but also safer through the use of sensors, smart cameras, and a modern interface.

Another key aspect is staff training: with the help of Virtual Reality, operators will be able to  practice in highly realistic digital environments, simulating real-life scenarios such as routine  airside operations, including aircraft and vehicle movement on the apron. As Giovanni Sanga, President of SACBO, explained, Project AVIO is an initiative with a  forward-looking vision—a clear example of how technology can improve airport management,  making the air transport sector smarter, safer, and more sustainable.
