As set out in detail in the Sustainability Report for the last few years, Milan Bergamo Airport has focused on the matter of its own environmental compatibility as part of the Airport Development Plan (PSA2030). This is a detailed document regarding the future possibilities for BGY, which brings together all the measures and initiatives required to be as sustainable as possible.
The PSA2030, which provides for the development of the airport from 2016 onwards, focuses on the efficiency and optimisation of structures and infrastructure. With regards to the consumption of raw materials, the airport has established guidelines aimed at reducing the use of electricity, water and methane gas. The strategies implemented include, for example, the installation of LED systems to substitute previous lighting both in the terminal and in passenger car parks, which has led to a reduction in energy consumption.
In 2022, the consumption of electricity increased in comparison to 2020 and 2021, mainly due to the recommencement of air activity and the expansion works carried out, which became fully operational. However, thanks to the high energy efficiency of the expansion works, the increase was just 15% over 2018, despite an overall increase in volume of more than 35%.
2022 has, however, seen a significant reduction in the use of methane gas in comparison to the previous two-year period, thanks to energy saving policies implemented on a European level.
The airport also carried out regular analysis of drinking and wastewater, the quality of which is in line with standards set by current environmental regulations.
It is important to stress that all the indicators referring to airport activity in the 2020-2021 period are considered to be unrepresentative, due to the fall in flight and passenger numbers caused by the pandemic. In any case, Milan Bergamo Airport continues to pursue its environmental sustainability goals in this post-pandemic phase, with a constant commitment to minimising the impact of its activities.
