BGYIS goes electric, new sustainable vehicles operative on the apron at Milan Bergamo Airport

Actions aimed at reducing waste and emissions involve every aspect of Milan Bergamo Airport and together can make a fundamental contribution to creating a cleaner world.BGYIS, the Handling Agent at Milan Bergamo Airport, which every day provides a range of services within the terminal, has implemented a new sustainable policy with a view to favouring the use of electric ground service equipment (GSE) alongside vehicles with increasingly efficient low-consumption motors. This policy also extends to the fleet of company vehicles, which is almost completely electric. In full implementation of its environmental principles, BGYIS is also pursuing policies aimed at raising awareness in the phases of purchase and management of company equipment.

Demonstration of this renewed approach can be found in the first electrically driven Ground Power Unit, which has been in use since 2020, initially leased, but that will be available for purchase at the beginning of 2023. The effort to adopt more ecologically friendly equipment continued in 2022, a year that saw the implementation of a purchase campaign for more than twenty electric vehicles for Handling activities, which will be operational as of 2023. A fleet of vehicles that continues to expand, alongside the eight tugs, the four cargo loaders, the eight luggage belts, two passenger stairways and the lift truck already in use.

In line with SACBO requirements, an electric Ambulift is also planned for introduction, dedicated to reduced mobility passengers and due to arrive during summer 2023.Furthermore, the fleet of company cars for employee use is now almost completely composed of electric vehicles, a process that saw the first four vehicles at the end of 2016, destined for operations both within and outside of the airport area, and that continues to date.

The commitment of SACBO, BGYIS and the other organisations surrounding the airport to reducing the environmental impact of its activities and promoting more ecological solutions is increasingly tangible, with the aim of becoming a model for other companies looking to adopt more sustainable practices.
