The president of SACBO, Giovanni Sanga, has announced the opening of the new section of the cycle and pedestrian ring route, which has been constructed in the northeastern area of the airport perimeter, from the new roundabout on the Paderno di Seriate road to the level of the taxiway for runway heading 28, connecting with the Parco del Serio cycle route.
The perimeter cycle and pedestrian ring route is a strategic project in terms of sustainable mobility, forming part of the 2030 Airport Development Plan, with the aim of offering passengers, workers and visitors to the airport an ecological and healthy alternative to motorised transportation.
Furthermore, a presentation had been made regarding the project for 2024 for an additional section of the cycle and pedestrian route, leading from the roundabout on the Paderno di Seriate road to Via Cavour in the municipality of Orio al Serio, connecting to the Taramelli Aero Club, which provides access to existing cycle routes in the municipalities of Seriate and Orio al Serio.
The cycle and pedestrian ring route will be extended to the connection point to the roadways east of the airport, along Via Matteotti in the municipality of Grassobbio, connecting BGY to Bergamo and the motorway network and favouring increased safety and traffic flow.
Celebrating the territory: an opportunity for cultural and tourist development
The construction of the perimeter cycle and pedestrian ring route is not only aimed at sustainable mobility; it also represents an opportunity for local cultural and tourist development. For example, the airport has co-funded the “My Castle Street” project, developed by the municipalities of Bagnatica, Calcinate, Cavernago and Costa di Mezzate with the aim of connecting the castles of Malpaga, Cavernago and Costa di Mezzate, residences of significant importance that represent local history and tradition.
The cycle and pedestrian ring route and “My Castle Street” form part of the BERGAMO-BRESCIA cycle route, which was launched during the year of Bergamo Brescia Capitals of Culture 2023, and the “MUOVIMI” cycle and pedestrian route, which connects the cities of Munich and Milan.
The initiatives and works carried out by BGY continue, embracing a new paradigm of mobility centred on sustainability and safety with a view to ensuring that the area is increasingly people focused.
