The challenges of climate change and the transformation of territories has led us to reflect on tangible solutions to “change direction”. We make a daily effort to redimension our environmental impact through a series of mitigation and compensation measures as provided for by the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) decree and the 2030 Airport Development Plan.
The measures in question concern a number of provisions that place particular focus on – and provide support for – local administration and the resident population in the vicinity of the airport, in full continuity with the actions taken in the past.
The aim of the 2030 airport development programme is precise; to develop an “airport landscape” with the lowest possible impact on the surrounding environment and a “transition zone” that serves as an ecological buffer between the airport and the surrounding agricultural and urban areas.
In 2022, the airport completed the moving of the VOR radio support system, a project provided for in the 2015 airport development programme that continued with the implementation of a plan for environmental mitigation and compensation that saw the reintegration of previously felled trees both locally and within the Municipality of Bergamo, which was completed at the beginning of 2023.
In support of local public administration, a number of projects are currently under way that are due to be completed by the end of 2023, in particular the creation of anti-noise barriers, ordnance clearance, the planting of green areas and the building of new infrastructure.
The works also concern creation as well as mitigation, offering the local community a net improvement in structures and transportation, such as the construction of cycle paths near to the airport, the renovation of school roofs and the creation of a sewage network.
Another initiative involved the free concession of land in the vicinity of the airport to surrounding municipalities; since 2007, SACBO has granted the use of approximately 24,000 m2 of land to the Municipality of Orio al Serio to extend green areas and the implementation of other works to benefit the population.
With a view to reducing acoustic pollution in residential buildings, we have planned acoustic mitigation works in the homes closest to the airport and subject to elevated noise levels.
BGY continues to focus on sustainability, constantly striving to protect the surrounding environment and improving the lives of the local residents, laying out the path for the terminal for a greener and more sustainable future.
