Active in area enhancement programmes and in the promotion of sustainable initiatives and practices, at SACBO we have been promoting the use of bicycles for many years through projects aimed at improving conditions for cycling in the area surrounding the terminal.
This commitment is reflected in the various certificates received in recent months, the first of which dates back to last September when, during the Agri Travel & Slow Travel Expo – Fiera dei Territori (the territory trade fair), we were awarded CFE – Azienda Amica della Bicicletta (Bicycle Friendly Company) “silver” level certification by FIAB – Federazione Italiana Ambiente e Bicicletta (Italian Federation for the Environment and Cycling), the Italian member of a consortium of 16 European partners promoting the first and only voluntary European standard for bike-friendly companies.
This achievement was then confirmed on 15 December 2021; during the inauguration of the new west wing of the terminal, SACBO received further FIAB “Bicycle Friendly Company” certification, covering the entire airport, making us the first Italian company, as well as the first European airport manager, to obtain certification.
These two certificates are a great source of pride and an incentive to continue on a path towards the future that is linked to all those other local initiatives that will lead Bergamo to “pedal ever harder”; first and foremost, of course, the future Bergamo-Brescia cycle route, which, as part of “Italian Capital of Culture 2023”, will connect the two cities, making Milan Bergamo Airport a potential destination for cycle tourism enthusiasts.
The certificates are recognition of our commitment to encourage and support the use of bicycles, both among our staff, by promoting bike-to-work, and by extending the proposal to all airport users. Our philosophy is expressed through a series of services and initiatives made available to passengers as well, to promote the use of bicycles in an area like Bergamo, which is already served by a highly virtuous bicycle system.
The project for a cycle and pedestrian ring path around the airport grounds connecting to the existing and future network, the bicycle assistance point set up in recent months, and the storage and rental facility that will soon be built and that is destined to become a true service station for cyclists, are the main projects that we have implemented and plan to implement in order to make the airport even more bike friendly.
