Constantly and actively involved in the care and enhancement of our territory, over the years we have carried out a series of environmental mitigation initiatives for the benefit of the areas around the airport.
The “Laghèt di rane” (frog pond), inaugurated in April 2019, was just one of the environmental redevelopment projects in which we have participated in recent years; today, three years on, we are delighted to see that the space has once again become a meeting point for the citizens of neighbouring towns.
In the 1950s, the body of water was a traditional summer destination for local Seriate youths, with diving, swimming and outdoor games.
In the years before the restoration works, the frog pond was frequented by citizens from neighbouring communities as a place to relax and enjoy the wilderness. Unfortunately, due to rationalisation works on the irrigation network, the brook that fed the pools was diverted and drained, turning the pond into a ditch overrun by brambles and weeds.
Thus, when the Serio Park took over the redevelopment of the area for environmental and educational purposes in 2019, we were delighted to be able to participate in the project, providing citizens with a place to relax and, at the same time, contribute to restoring the area’s popularity.
The pond, which falls within the buffer area of the airport’s visual runway guide path, had completely come back to life within a few months, with the restoration of the pond bottom, the filling with water and the replanting of vegetation once the area had been recovered and cleared.
Today, the pond has, clearly, changed. The project aimed to create a lake for the growth of local fauna and flora; the pond, whose depth was reduced to only 80 centimetres, was planted with species typical of shallow waters, while native shrubs and trees were placed along the perimeter. The result is a natural environment in which to relax, surrounded by the colours of the vegetation and lulled by the song of nightingales drinking from the pond.
