Sustainability is becoming increasingly embedded in Milan Bergamo Airport’s corporate strategy. This is highlighted in a recent feature published by eco.bergamo, which explores the progress made by the airport in this area.
The journey began in 2018, when the Group started preparing its Sustainability Report as an internal pilot project in collaboration with the University of Bergamo. “The first version of the report was intended for internal use,” recalls Chief Sustainability Officer Paolo Deforza. The first public report followed in 2019 and, despite the postponement of certain regulatory obligations under the so-called Stop-the-Clock mechanism, Milan Bergamo Airport chose to continue its reporting process voluntarily.
Today, sustainability reporting involves the entire organisation and follows the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and the principle of double materiality. The latest report has also undergone limited assurance by EY, an independent audit firm. “Continuing to prepare the report brings real value,” emphasises Sustainability Team Leader Federica Crema, as it provides structured data that can be used to define objectives and responsibilities.
Alongside sustainability reporting, the Group has another key tool to ensure the effective governance of sustainability: its ESG Policy, approved by the Board of Directors on 20 January and described by Crema as a “compass” guiding the company’s values. Its three pillars — environmental, social and governance — cover areas such as biodiversity protection, sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, people development, inclusion, employee welfare, value creation for local communities, integrity and sustainable procurement. A dedicated sustainable procurement policy was adopted in 2025.
This work is coordinated by a Sustainability Team comprising approximately 15–20 experts. During the first six months of the year, the team focuses on sustainability reporting, while the following six months are dedicated to monitoring and updating the Group’s three-year strategic plan.
The next step is to integrate reporting and strategic planning into a single digital platform, connecting data, objectives and decision-making processes. This development will take sustainability beyond reporting, making it an increasingly integral part of Milan Bergamo Airport’s future business decisions.
