Milan Bergamo Airport increasingly accessible: commitment to the new railway link

Modal integration and the development of sustainable infrastructure are among the main pillars of Milan Bergamo Airport’s growth strategy, aimed at promoting more efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly mobility.

In this context, on 16 October 2025, the airport, together with the Italian Railway Engineers Association (CIFI), hosted the conference “An Operating Model for the Railway Link to Bergamo Airport”, held at the Papa Giovanni XXIII Conference Centre.

The event was opened by Giovanni Sanga, President of SACBO, who highlighted how the new railway connection represents a strategic milestone in creating an airport that is increasingly integrated into the regional transport network and able to reduce the environmental impact of mobility associated with airport traffic.

The discussion brought together institutional, academic, and technical representatives to outline the operational scenarios that will accompany the launch of the railway connection.

Speakers included Elena Carnevali, Mayor of Bergamo; Pasquale Gandolfi, President of the Province of Bergamo; and regional councillors Paolo Franco and Franco Lucente, responsible for Transport and Sustainable Mobility.

Professor Stefano Paleari of the University of Bergamo explored the theme of accessibility as a key element for the competitiveness and sustainability of the airport system, while Systematica and PTS Clas presented research on passengers’ willingness to use the future rail service.

The conference concluded with remarks from Giorgio Spadi, President of CIFI Milan, and Gianni Scarfone, member of the boards of SACBO and CIFI, who underscored how the railway link represents a decisive step toward more sustainable intermodal mobility—capable of connecting the airport to the regional network, reducing emissions from road transport, and promoting a more balanced distribution among different travel modes.

For Milan Bergamo Airport, this means consolidating a concrete commitment: contributing to the development of infrastructure that generates environmental, economic, and social value for the entire community.
